When Bad Things Happen To Good Shirts

I have been feeling for about 10 days as though an overweight, dust-covered shi-tzu has taken up residence in my sinus cavity, so this morning I finally summoned the intelligence to make an appointment with my doctor. Based on past experience, I figured my malady was a pretty cut-and-tried sinus infection – shouldn’t take but two minutes for the doctor to look into my ears, write me an illegible prescription for a Z-Pack and send me on my way.

I arrived at the doctor’s office 15 minutes early. After reading two issues of Entertainment Weekly, my gaunt, balding, children’s-charity-tie-wearing doctor burst through the door and into examination room two.

“How’s it going, Daniel?” he asked. I was under no impression that he actually knew my name. He saw it in my chart.

“I’m OK. How are you doing?”

“Better than you from what I can tell,” he said.

I said nothing. I just waited for him to start pushing down on my sinuses and perhaps dangle a rawhide chew toy up my nose to lure out the offending shi-tzu. But before he could begin, you know, doctoring, he looked up at me and gave me a once-over – the kind you might expect if you walked into a Mercedes-Benz dealer wearing nothing but a winning smile and a cock ring.

“Wow,” he said. “That is a really nice shirt.”

(What? What the fuck did he just say to me?)

“Thanks,” I said. “Eddie Bauer.”

“Eddie Bauer, huh?” he said. “Wow. I mean that is a really, really nice shirt.”

And with that my doctor walked over and began to feel my clothing – WHILE I WAS WEARING IT! He ran his index finger across the seam stitching on my shoulder. He grabbed a piece of the fabric on my sleeve between his thumb and forefinger and rolled it back and forth like a thumb-sucking kid copping a touch-buzz from the ear of his teddy bear as he falls asleep. He ran the back of his hand along the wooden buttons.

(If he kisses me, I am so fucking out of here.)

At this point, I was completely freaked out. But the little four-year-old inside of me thought if I didn’t sit still I would have to get a shot and I really didn’t want a shot. So just sat there, staring straight ahead, letting the doctor get his jollies from my starched white Eddie Bauer button-down shirt, which I will never wear again.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shirt quite like this one,” he said with kind of a glassed-over look on his face, the same look you see on the face of a porn star just after the money shot. “It’s so strong and firm. Very well-constructed, you know what I mean?”

“Yeah,” I said. “Strong. Firm.”

(Kind of like the bottom of the Timberland hiking boot on my right foot, which is going straight up your ass if you don’t BACK UP right now, you sick, sick freak.)

I needed to change the subject immediately or face the very genuine possibility that my doctor was going to ask me to remove my underpants so he could begin his examination of my sinuses with a closer look at my butthole. I recalled – in a moment of absolute heterosexual, woman-loving terror – that he and I are both hockey players.

“So,” I said, “have you, um, scored any goals lately?”

With that, the glaze vanished from his eyes and he was a human being again. He snapped out of his cotton-fetish-driven haze and, lo and behold, began to examine my sinuses. Never did get an answer to the hockey question, but I didn’t really need one. I just wanted to get my prescription and run like the wind.

Didn’t I ask you to remind me to find a female doctor?

in his defense, it does sound like a lovely shirt. that it is starched makes it all the more thrilling. i do love a well starched white shirt. i think i'm going to buy starch and add it to my ironing festivities. i do so love to iron.

can i steal your phrase "touch-buzz"? love it. my son gets a touch-buzz by sucking his thumb, while simlutaneously sticking a finger from his other hand into his belly-button. i am curious to see where that hand goes once he doesn't have to wear a diaper anymore!

I have a VERY serious fetish for heavily starched white dress shirts....wearing them and seeing other men wearing them. I am especially aroused by pulling up the collar and wearing it that way. What a turn on it is for me. It would be wonderful to hear from other guys with an interest in this. Please....

Many of our modern drugs have harsh side-affects and cost the “earth”, so the next time you come down with a cold or the flu or oxidative stress, why not try a gentle alternative that costs next to nothing?

Instead of immediately forking over large amounts of money for over-the-counter drugs, go to the kitchen cupboard and see what you can find to relieve your symptoms including oxidative stress.

Here are some helpful hints for oxidative stress …

A simple hot compress applied to the face is very soothing to those throbbing aches and pains of a blocked sinus, while a few drops of eucalyptus oil on a handkerchief can provide welcome relief for similar conditions. While supplements of vitamin C, D and zinc will shorten the lifespan of a common cold, a hot lemon drink is also extremely good. And be sure to cuddle-up in bed when you have a cold, as it will make the body sweat out the germs.

Cool lemon juice and honey are a great soother for a sore throat and gives the body much-needed vitamin C at the same time The juice of one lemon in a glass of water is sufficient. Melt the honey in a little hot water for ease of mixing.

A smear of Vaseline or petroleum jelly will do wonders for those sore lips and nose that often accompany a cold.

A 'streaming cold' where the nose and eyes water profusely, can respond to drinking onion water. Simply dip a slice of onion into a glass of hot water for two seconds, then sip the cooled water throughout the day. Half an onion on the bedside table also alleviates cold symptoms because its odor is inhaled while you sleep.

People prone to catarrh may find that chewing the buds from a pine or larch throughout the day will clear up their condition in just a few days.

Do you suffer from sore eyes? If your eyes are sore from lengthy exposure to the sun, try beating the white of an egg and then spread it over a cloth and bandage the eyes with it. Leave the preparation on overnight. Soft cheese (quark) is also a good remedy for this condition.

For those unpleasant times when you suffer from diarrhea, two tablespoons of brown vinegar will usually fix the problem. Vinegar can be rather horrible to take, but who cares! The problem is more horrible. Vinegar can usually be found in most people's cupboards, so you don't need to worry about finding someone to run to the shop for you in an emergency.

Sleepless? Instead of reaching for sleeping pills, which can quickly become addictive, try this: Drink only caffeine free tea or coffee starting late in the afternoon.. Go to bed earlier rather than later, as being overtired tends to keep people awake. Make sure the bedroom is dark and quiet. Use only pure wool or cotton sheets and blankets. Polyester materials can cause sweat and make you thirsty (if your child constantly asks for water throughout the night, this could be the reason).

And don't watch those scary movies just before retiring! If you still can't sleep, make a tea of lemongrass or drink a nightcap of herbal tea containing chamomile. It's easy to grow lemongrass in your garden or start a flower pot on the balcony for ease of picking. Simply steep a handful in boiling water for five minutes. Honey may be added for a sweetener.

Of course there will be times when you do need modern drugs, so if these simple remedies don't have the required affect, be sure to see a health care professional.

I was searching for Elvis and somehow ended up in your blog, but you know I'm sure I saw him in a car lot yesterday, which is really strange because the last time I saw him was in the supermarket. No honest really, he was right there in front of me, next to the steaks singing "Love me Tender". He said to me (his lip was only slightly curled) "Boy, you need to get yourself a San Diego cosmetic surgery doctor ,to fit into those blue suede shoes of yours. But Elvis said in the Ghetto nobody can afford a San Diego plastic surgery doctor. Dude I'm All Shook Up said Elvis. I think I'll have me another cheeseburger. Then I'm gonna go round and see Michael Jackson and we're gonna watch a waaaay cool make-over show featuring some Tijuana dentists on the TV in the back of my Hummer. And then he just walked out of the supermarket singing. . . "You give me love and consolation,
You give me strength to carry on " Strange day or what? :-)
