Playing Taps

Left-Handed Power-Hitting Son and I were up before the sun this morning, preparing for our Saturday morning ritual: a trip to Starbucks, where we scarf banana loaf cake and chocolate milk, and we read the sports page together. I’m raising my son to be a man, and this is what men do. We talk about football and get all hopped-up on sugar first thing in the morning.

Before we left the house, we were in Left-Handed Power-Hitting Son’s room getting him dressed. I was sitting on his bed and after I had wrestled his squirmy feet into his socks, I asked him to go to the closet and pick out some shoes.

He returned with two shiny black tap shoes.

“Who’s are those?” I asked.

“They’re mine,” he said. “I’m going to be a tap dancer.”

Blink.

Blink. Blink.

My first impulse was to lock him in a closet with a stack of Playboys and monster truck magazines and not let him out until his 18th birthday. But then I remembered a story my mother told me about my youth. Seems I used to carry my Hot Wheels cars around the neighborhood in a pink vinyl purse. And I turned out voraciously hetero nonetheless.

“Really, bud?” I asked. “Where did you get those shoes?”

He didn’t hear the question. He was on the floor, grunting, trying to squeeze his size five feet into a girls’ size three tap shoe. He was growing frustrated because only three of his toes could be wedged in. I intervened before his frustration elevated into a full-blown tantrum.

“How about this, pal: we’ll put on some other shoes for now and work on the tap shoes when we get home from Starbucks. OK?”

“OK, I guess,” he said.

He then retreated to his closet and began to dig around. A part of me was petrified that he would return with a pair of stiletto heels or ballet slippers. But he reappeared holding his new Power Ranger sneakers – the ones with little red lights on the side that light up each time he takes a step. Thank Christ.

In the car on the way to Starbucks, I queried Left-Handed Power-Hitting Son about his interest in tap. I wasn’t trying to discourage him just because it wasn’t the interest I would have chosen for him, but – well, I take that back. Yes. Yes I was.

He detailed for me that all of the little girls in the neighborhood take tap and he wanted to be with them. And it struck me that my little boy wasn’t a sissy at all. He was trying to impress the girls. Because we’re men, and that’s what men do.

Come on, tap, cance, yoga - where all the hot chicks hang out. Just avoid aerobics, you don't want them to see you sweat more than they do. He's starting early, wanting to hang out where the girls are. You're training him right.

Every year my son Dylan and I have been building our Halloween animatronic display. This year we added 12 new figures and my wife had been making the clothes etc. but then I clued in that Halloween Costumes were the ideal solution - ya, ok I'm slow but...This year is really cool because we've done an HP Lovecraft display that I'm sure he'd appreciate but I'm not so sure he'd approve of this - The Necronomicon - Is it just me or is that just plain goofy ? Anyway, everybody is doing their own Haunted House thing now but hey - it's fun and if you've got kids I really suggest you try it yourself if you haven't already. It's a nice change from the usual Christmas Lights routine and a lot of scaaarrry fun. Happy Halloween everybody.

It’s 11:00 in the morning and your energy is waning. Minutes seem to tick by like hours and your mind feels foggy. You’ve still got six more hours to look alert and act productive and get over separation anxiety disorder, so how do you cope with the afternoon blahs? Follow these six tips!

1. If you have a job that involves sitting at a desk all day or staring at a computer screen, take five minutes to stand up or lean back, close your eyes and stretch, especially in your shoulder and leg areas. Being seated all the time can make your whole body feel stiff and sleepy. A good stretch session helps limber up your body and gets the blood flowing again.

2. Avoid the tempting lure of caffeine or sugar-laden foods such as coffee, tea or chocolate. Caffeine may perk up your energy levels temporarily, but it also has a bad habit of leaving you sluggish after the effect has worn off. Instead, choose whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables to give your body the fuel it really wants! Eating healthier will boost your mood, elevate your alertness, change separation anxiety disorder and make you feel better all day long.

3. Along with healthier foods, take a quick 10-15 minute walk during your lunch break. Just a few minutes will give you a burst of energy that refreshes you and makes you feel more alert – while burning off your lunch calories in the process!

4. Sometimes, afternoon slumps can be your body’s way of telling you that it needs something. You may be feeling tired if your blood sugar is low (which happens especially after the effect of those caffeine and high sugar foods has worn off!). Packing a low calorie snack like graham crackers, granola, fruit or vegetable slices can give your body a boost and keep you from feeling hungry in the late afternoon and caving in to the urge to devour the entire contents of the vending machine after work!

5. Drowsiness is often a sign that you’re not getting enough water. Drinking more water throughout the day not only helps keep you awake, but also keeps you from feeling those hunger pangs that inevitably creep up in mid-morning. Taking a large sports bottle that you can drink from throughout the day is a great way to get your recommended eight glasses a day as well!

6. If afternoon fatigue is a recurring problem, it may be a side effect of medications you are taking. Allergy pills are well known culprits, as are some blood pressure and anxiety/depression medicines. Don’t try to circumvent these effects with caffeine, otherwise you’ll overload your body with stimulants while it’s already trying to deal with drowsiness, and you’ll feel mentally and physically exhausted. Instead, try a short 15-20 minute catnap. You’ll be surprised how refresh you’ll feel when you wake up! (Don’t try this at work though – I know it’s tempting!)

If you follow these tips on a regular basis, you’ll not only make it through the afternoon blahs, but you’ll also feel better physically and mentally, sleep better at night, and wake up rejuvenated and re-energized the next morning. Make it a GREAT day! separation anxiety disorder

Help me Dude, I think I'm lost..... I was searching for Elvis and somehow ended up in your blog, but you know I'm sure I saw him in a car lot yesterday, which is really strange because the last time I saw him was in the supermarket. No honest really, he was right there in front of me, next to the steaks singing "Love me Tender". He said to me (his lip was only slightly curled) "Boy, you need to get yourself a San Diego cosmetic surgery doctor ,to fit into those blue suede shoes of yours. But Elvis said in the Ghetto nobody can afford a San Diego plastic surgery doctor. Dude I'm All Shook Up said Elvis. I think I'll have me another cheeseburger. Then I'm gonna go round and see Michael Jackson and we're gonna watch a waaaay cool make-over show featuring some Tijuana dentists on the TV in the back of my Hummer. And then he just walked out of the supermarket singing. . . "You give me love and consolation,
You give me strength to carry on " Strange day or what? :-)
